Unveiled in October 2018 on the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Statue of Unity was conceptualized to honor the legacy of India’s “Iron Man” — the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India. Patel played a pivotal role in the unification of over 560 princely states into the Indian Union after independence in 1947, earning him reverence across the country.
Designed by acclaimed Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar, the statue took nearly five years to complete. It involved the collaboration of over 3,000 workers, including more than 300 engineers.
