Meta Platforms’ Facebook and Instagram Experience Global Outage

Major social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms, encountered widespread technical issues today, impacting thousands of users globally. Downdetector, a website tracking online service outages, reported a surge in user-submitted problems exceeding 18,000 for Instagram alone.

The reported issues included:

  • App Functionality: Inability to launch and utilize the Instagram app.
  • Server Connectivity: Difficulties establishing connections to Instagram’s servers.
  • Login Issues: A smaller percentage of users encountered problems logging in to their accounts.

Similar disruptions were observed on Facebook, albeit to a lesser extent. Users on both platforms reported encountering error messages such as “Something went wrong” and “There’s an issue and the page could not be loaded.”

Independent internet oversight group NetBlocks verified the international nature of the outage, ruling out localized internet disruptions or filtering as potential causes. This points towards an issue within Meta’s infrastructure impacting both Facebook and Instagram.

This incident marks the second such outage for Meta Platforms in 2024, following login problems experienced by thousands of users in March. While Meta has yet to officially comment on the cause of the current outage, it appears to be progressively resolving. Users facing continued access issues are advised to wait a brief period and attempt re-accessing their accounts later.
