Amit Shah: Govt Offering ₹50,000 Monthly Aid to Athletes Aiming for 2036 Olympics

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday emphasized the Modi government’s strong commitment to transforming India into a global sports powerhouse. Speaking at an event in Ahmedabad, Shah stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership over the past decade, unprecedented attention has been given to nurturing athletes and building world-class sports infrastructure across the country.

One of the key highlights of Shah’s address was the announcement that athletes preparing for the 2036 Olympic Games are now receiving monthly financial assistance of ₹50,000 from the central government. This initiative, according to Shah, is part of a long-term strategy to significantly improve India’s Olympic performance and encourage youth participation in sports.

“In the last 10 years, under PM Modi’s guidance, sports have received priority like never before. From the Khelo India program to Mission Olympic Cell support, the focus has been on building talent from the grassroots. Now, we are ensuring athletes get ₹50,000 every month to support their preparation for the 2036 Olympics,” Shah stated.

India has been showing gradual improvement in Olympic sports, with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics marking a historic milestone where the country won a record seven medals, including a gold in javelin by Neeraj Chopra. With an eye on the future, the government is already working to identify and nurture potential medal winners for the 2036 Olympics.

Shah highlighted that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and other national sports federations are closely monitoring athlete development. The monthly stipend aims to cover training expenses, dietary requirements, equipment, and other essential costs athletes face during their Olympic journey.

The move has been widely welcomed by sports professionals and analysts. National badminton coach Pullela Gopichand praised the government’s forward-thinking strategy, saying, “Sustained financial support is crucial for athletes, especially in a country where many come from modest backgrounds. ₹50,000 a month can be a game-changer in an athlete’s formative years.”

This initiative also complements existing schemes like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which provides elite athletes with customized training and international exposure. The government’s approach signals a shift from ad-hoc support to sustained, long-term investment in sports talent.

Moreover, there is growing speculation that India may bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, with Ahmedabad being considered a potential host city. The Gujarat government, with central support, is developing the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, envisioned as one of the world’s largest multi-sport facilities. If the bid is successful, it would be a historic first for India.

Shah concluded his address by stating that the government’s commitment goes beyond medals—it is about instilling a sports culture in every Indian household. “We want sports to be seen as a viable career and a tool of national pride,” he said.

With the foundation laid, the road to 2036 could be transformative for Indian sports, and the government’s proactive approach might just lead the nation to a new era of Olympic success.
